The Rice Game

Hands up if you love rice!! (I wave frantically teehee) I really do love rice (smiles sheepishly). If cooked the way I like it, I could literally eat it everyday. Wait, I think I already do that hhmmmmm.....nehoooo

I happened upon this game quite by accident, don't ask for details, because they have escaped me. However it is addicting!!! Okay this is how it works you have different subjects areas in which you can play, English vocabulary is the first and remains, to my knowledge, the most popular subject area; other subject areas include (but are not limited to) humanities, chemistry, anatomy and SAT prep. Now I know that this has already begun to sound like a drag but stick with me here. So in whichever subject area you choose once you enter the site, you get multiple choice questions with increasing difficulty with every answer you get right. The deal maker (is that a real phrase?) here is that for each answer that you get right the website donates ten grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme. Isn't that awesome?!?!

If you are any thing like me (here's to hoping.......j/k) whenever I find random little games or quizzes that test me on things that I have learned and should know, I get really competitive with myself (yes I said myself) and I constantly try to best my high score or level. I really go crazy with it, because I find myself with this ridiculous need to do it perfectly no mistakes whatsoever and if I screw up I don't continue. I stop, go right back to the beginning, and start again aiming for the perfect score. Maaannnnn writin' that all out and re-reading that is a little weird. Ah well on the bright side as a result of my craziness a family or a person who doesn't have means of sourcing a meal on their own, have a chance of some sort of a sustainable life as a result of this simple game. Which by the way costs you NOTHING........but time : -).

So please go on over to freerice.com and try it out, tell a friend who's doing SAT prep, have them test it out. If it turns out that you don't like it, it's okay i'm sure you'll get enough questions right to donate a meal to someone who needs it. 'Til next time thanks for your ears (or eyes rather but that sounds a lot more odd).

Mirror, Mirror

I definitely expected to fall in love with this movie. In the aftermath, when all is said, done and watched I have to say that I don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread, I definitely think it is a good movie. I expected humour, it delivered, I expected singing and dancing and it delivered (though more on that later).

It's a little different from the regular telling(Snow White doesn't eat the apple and "die"), but not that much departed from the popular version (Snow still ends up with the Prince in the end) happily ever afters were still very much in order. The seven dwarfs had different names, which was bad and not so bad, I could deal. There was a beast which turned out to be Snow's father (which I predicted, woot woot!) Also Snow was a thief?! Have I missed something? Because this isn't the only version with her being a thief (note "Once Upon a Time" on ABC) and i'm starting to wonder if it was in the original Grimm version (which I read, but now I have forgotten all except that it was depressing) and I can't recall if it was in the Disney version (highly doubt it) but I didn't really like that version anyways, it was entirely forgettable in my mind.

"It was a wonderful place the people were always singing and dancing..." end quote by Snow on visiting the village and finding the horrible state it was reduced to due to the Queen's negligence and misrule. Best line in the movie EVER!!! Simply because this lady (or the screenwriter rather) understands perfectly my view of life and how I believe it should be! Singing and dancing everyday would make the world such a better place. There would be a lot more happy people and happy people make a happy world, just my thoughts. I keep telling people life should be a musical (preferably with lots of beautiful and brightly coloured outfits and tights!) Now about that song and dance number(which I enjoyed)....would you expect Bollywood in this movie? Ponder that for a moment.

The movie also had a penchant for rhymes, "This is her first kiss, do not mess with me on this." by Napoleon the dwarf and "Tell them bread is meat, less is more...commoners love a good metaphor." by the Queen. In the second quote the end part rhymes not the beginning but you needed to see the whole thing haha.

I believe i've rattled on long enough about this movie, it is enjoyable, I recommend it. As to how much I would recommend it; well I usually judge movies by whether or not I would buy it, buying it suggests watching it more than once, which I would definitely do with this movie!!! There is definitely lot's more interesting stuff and little tweaks in the story which I enjoyed, and now it's your turn to go enjoy, so go go go Allez Allez Allez! Btw Julia Roberts is GORGEOUS in this movie ans Sean Bean is in it! yay!

I wonder how Snow White and the Huntsman will fare?... : -)

Pan Chicken Regionals

Man I don't know your all handling it, but I am DYING! This has got to be the hottest summer since, I don't know EVER?! I feel like every time I go outside I need to be back in the shower! It's ridiculous and it's only the end of May!

Well, today was, yet again, one of those ridiculously hot days but praise Jah the breeze was blowing!! Man what a relief!! It wasn't blowing as constantly as I would have hoped, but you know what they say; beggars can't be choosers! So i'll take what I can get thank you very much!

Today was also a very good day! It reminded me of how much I have missed living at home in the past five years. I went with my family to the annual Pan Chicken Competition. First time I heard of it was today and I do believe- God's willing-I will most def. make it a point to attend next year. It was wonderful! Now before you go expecting fireworks, let me remind you that I am very easily amused, which could be a good thing or a bad thing [but that's a topic for another day! ; -)]

I walked in not knowing what to expect, I figured we were going to do some eating, but man was I in for a treat. There was food everywhere! And if you know me, you know that one of the many ways to my heart is through my tum tum... ; -) In this competition, different chef's from all over the island compete for the best Pan Chicken in the various parishes (and Jamaica has 14 now there's a lesson for ya!). The first and second place winners (from each parish) that were chosen today then go on to compete again in the finals! All of the chef's have their own station where they are cooking up a storm and you have the chance to try their pan chicken awesomeness!

All in all it was a wonderful day and I enjoyed it I, did a little jewelry shopping from the vendors, got to sample Red Stripe's new light apple and lime flavours, spent quality time with my wonderful family, ate VERY good food and I got to eat a coconut!! I hadn't had one in such a long time!! It was heavenly!! So if you're ever in Jamaica at this time of year check out the Festival and even if you're not in Jamaica around this time of year you can get Pan chicken almost anywhere and LITERALLY almost any hour of the day. Even at 4 a.m.?! Yes even at 4 a.m.
