The Curse of the Champions

Today's round of matches started off good. Australia vs The Netherlands was a wonderful game to watch. Then came the travesty that was the Spain vs Chile match (and don't even get me started on Cameroon). Now based on how these teams have been playing in this World Cup, I completely expected Chile to win. However, I didn't expect Spain to play so badly! I don't think I am the only one with that sentiment. Even the commentator kept harping on the fact that they have been playing exceptionally well for the past six years. Perhaps, as he said, this was just the end of an era. I mean they leave this World Cup with only ONE goal; and their keeper conceded 7 goals! After just two games they have left the World Cup; well they have one more game, but really, it won't count for much except experience (HA!). I bet that this is the game that they play their best in LOL!

The events today have led me to dub, experiences like these, The Curse of the Champions. Think about it, Italy won the Cup in 2006 in superb fashion. They couldn't defend their title in 2010. After poor decisions and playing, which was unlike them, they bowed out at the group stage. Spain, were champions in 2010. To say that this year they couldn't defend their title would be an understatement. After a terrible show (definitely not what they are capable of if the past couple years are anything to go by), they are out of the Cup at the group stage as well.

It would be interesting to see who wins this Cup. Hopefully they won't fall prey to this curse. Third times the charm they say, so maybe they'll escape it....

I think this says it all....

Yours,

Adiós España.......

Promise Yourself

To be so strong that nothing
can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity
to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel
that there is something in them
To look at the sunny side of everything
and make your optimism come true.

To think only the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past
and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times
and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,
and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world,
not in loud words but great deeds.
To live in faith that the whole world is on your side
so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

It's My Party

I have heard this song in so many different ways and so many different times; and on many of those occasions I have been known to roll my eyes and sigh très très loudly. However I, quite by accident of course, have found a version that speaks to me (ahahahahaha). C'est magnifique!

My favourite part is "I put ma best dress on. Overpriiiiiiiiccccceeeddddd......" On the same note.....Icona Pop is kinda awesome. I never knew till now!!

More Words.....

I came across this gem because a friend shared it on Facebook from the "Word Porn" page. It spoke to me on soooooooo many levels. The language is beautiful. The way it is written, organised, put together....EVERYTHING!

"You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the dreams you have, the conversations you engage in. You are what you take from these. You are the sound of the ocean, the breath of fresh air, the brightest light and the darkest corner. You are a collective of every experience you have had in your life. You are every single day. So drown yourself in a sea of knowledge and existence. Let the words run through your veins and let the colours fill your mind."

How gorgeous is that? I need to find who wrote this, so I can discover more of their work. This is too good. It's almost Oscar Wilde-esque.....almost. This also says to me, be careful what you take in. If you subscribe to the belief put forth above, then what you see, hear and experience will most inevitably become who you are. So it is probably wise to abandon all negative and bad behaviours. Embrace the positive and all the good experiences in life! Also, you and no one else has the ability to decide who you become in life. You have that power within your grasp. DO NOT give it away!

Yours,

"Let the words run through your veins and let the colours fill your mind...... : -)

Oscar Wilde on Debt

While re-reading (or listening rather since it was an audio-book) "A Woman of No Importance" the other day......

LADY STUTFIELD: [To Lord Alfred] How very, very charming those gold tipped cigarettes of yours are, Lord Alfred.
LORD ALFRED: They are awfully expensive. I can only afford them when I'm in debt.
LADY STUTFIELD: It must be terribly, terribly distressing to be in debt.
LORD ALFRED: One must have some occupation nowadays. If I hadn't my debts I shouldn't have anything to think about. All the chaps I know are in debt.
LADY STUTFIELD: But don't the people to whom you owe the money give you a great, great deal of annoyance?
LORD ALFRED: Oh, no, they write; I don't.

This, is one of the many reasons I love Oscar Wilde.

Indebtedly Yours,

Desiderata

Desiderata is latin for "desired things." It was written by American poet Max Ehrmann. These are good words. I discovered them at the hospital one day while I was on my Paediatric rotation. It was posted to the back of the door in the ECG room. Not quite sure what it has to do with ECG's specifically. Most likely nothing. The person who posted it there perhaps thought that it was a good reminder of how one should seek to live their life on a daily basis.

It was the first line that caught me. It--quite frankly--seems to be the only line I remember regularly. I find myself repeating it when I become upset, angry, or find my anxiety rising for whatever annoyance that sees fit to present itself to me at that moment. It helps.

"...remember what peace there may be in silence." It is difficult these days to just sit and be. I find it difficult. This may just be the best phrase in the whole poem. I believe that peace can be found in silence. Now if only I could get there......

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

Yours,

Peacefully.... : -)
